Sister Olivia Gives Little Maureen a B+

In a recent Maureen Dowd Op Ed, "An Ideal Husband," Father Pat Connor, a 79 year old priest, was invited to pontificate on the attributes of ideal husbands. I always believed many of the priests I have met during my lifetime in the commission were excellent judges of human character, particularly related to men as marriage partners.

Little Maureen should be given a gold star for during such a great job of researching who are the "correct" experts as she prepared her column. After all most of the wizened writer's today would seek out the secular, false profits of knowledge who pretend to have objective evidence to support their points-of-view. Little Maureen did the right thing here and sought out a man of great experience and self-evident spiritual truths. Here are some of Father Connor's excellent advice:

“Never marry a man who has no friends....”
“Does he use money responsibly? Is he stingy?"
“Steer clear of someone whose life you can run, who never makes demands counter to yours. It’s good to have a doormat in the home, but not if it’s your husband.
“Is he overly attached to his mother and her mythical apron strings?
“Does he have a sense of humor?

Little Maureen's essay was well written. Her penmanship was very good and she stayed within the margins. I didn't give her A because she did make one significant mistake. Our father has told us time and time again that a sense of humor can be a dangerous thing. A man with a sense of humor can easily take on the trappings of a cynic. Worst of all he may begin to see the world in a satiric manner. If our savior wanted men to have a sense of humor, he would have to give them some degree of humility.
